Welcome back, it’s Tuesday, which mean’s it’s also Top 10 Tuesdays, which is now hosted by Jana @ThatArtsyReaderGirl, make sure to check her blog out!
I really like this prompt, because I don’t often get a chance to stop and thing about all the amazing reasons that reading is so great. For me, reading is a part of my life, so I’m happy to list the many reasons I love it. I hope you all enjoy the list!
1. It’s an Escape
One of the best things about reading is that it let’s you escape to another world. Though not every story is a world completely different from our own, every book offers the opportunity of escape into another person’s life. I like being able to escape into a good story, especially if I’m not in a good place or if my life is stressful. It’s a way to get away for a while without having to go anywhere!
2. Learning New Things
I consider myself a life-long learner, so part of the reason why I read is so I can learn new things. I love learning from books, especially if it’s from a field that I did not study in school. One of my favorite things is to read non-fiction books in the scientific field, I always end up learning a lot. But I will read books in pretty much any field.
3. Gaining Perspective
Books offer a really unique opportunity to learn things from a new perspective. Whether it’s fiction or non-fiction, reading someone else’s words helps place me in a totally different surrounding and I get to look at things through the eyes of someone else. It’s just a great opportunity to experience news things. The diversity among authors is growing and offers even more opportunities to experience new perspectives.
When things are stressful or I’m sad, one of the best things is reading a familiar, beloved book for comfort. I love how books can offer comfort, partly because they offer escape. I have a lot of go-to books that I will read (or listen to!) to make me feel better and comfort me. I love that I can do something as simple as reading to feel comforted.
5. It Cheers Me Up
This goes with what I sad above, but reading cheers me up, too! I love picking out a book when I’m feeling down that I know will just make me feel better, or will make me laugh. I have books that I know will do this and it’s always nice to know that they’re there. If I’m sad or angry or upset, I can pick up these books and disappear for a while and when I’m done reading I’m in a better mood or a better headspace.
6. Supporting Authors
Like any craft, writers are amazing wordsmiths and reading is just one way that I, a person who appreciates their work, can support them. Similarly to buying a piece of art, buying and reading a book is a small way of letting that author know that I appreciate their work, their art, and that I want them to keep doing what they’re doing. It’s one of the reasons I started this blog, so I can let others know about authors I love and enjoy and lead them to these awesome writers. Reading lets me share the love!
Reading is also something I like to do to relax. There’s nothing better than spending a lazy day in bed, reading. Books are great for relaxing, you can read anywhere comfortable, you don’t have to worry about anything (except people interrupting you while you’re reading!) It’s why I enjoy easy, lighthearted reads, where I don’t have to think too hard and I can just enjoy the story.
8. It’s Fun
Reading is just fun. I have loved reading from a very young age. Similar to playing games or going to the movies, or hanging with friends, reading is just a fun thing to do. One of my favorite things is going to a bookstore or library and browsing for books. That’s almost half the fun!
9. Being Part of a Community
I love the many, many fandoms I am a part of. The reading community has some of the best fans. I love geeking out about a book with friends or others in book communities online. Book fans are so supportive! I have made so many new friends through the book-blogging community. I love the positivity and the mutual love we all have for books and authors.
10. It Makes Me Happy
Reading makes me so happy. I love falling in love with a new book, with reading words that feel so true to me, reading about characters that make me laugh or feel like true friends. Reading sparks my imagination and it inspires me to write, myself. I just love it and I don’t know what I’d do without books in my life.
