Animals from Books | Top 10 Tuesdays

Welcome back, it’s Tuesday, which mean’s it’s also Top 10 Tuesdays, which is now hosted by Jana @ThatArtsyReaderGirl, make sure to check her blog out!

I actually read a fair amount of books with animals in them or from animal perspectives (I enjoy this particular genre of fantasy as it is often more whimsical). I have had many a favorite animal character in my long career of reading, so I’m thrilled to have a chance to talk about some of them here!

Anyways, here’s the list:

1. Hedwig (Harry Potter series)

I love owls, in general, so of course when Hedwig came along, I became a huge fan. It was a big blow when she was killed off (sorry for the spoiler, but this book’s been out for ages!). I love how supportive to Harry she is, even though she never speaks. She’s a good companion and she delivers mail, so, incredibly helpful, too!

2. Nana (The Traveling Cat Chronicles)

One of the best things about The Traveling Cat Chronicles is that it’s partially told from Nana, the cat’s, perspective. Nana has that very typical indifferent-but-I-secretly-care cat tone, and I loved reading from his point of view. I’m a big cat person, so it’s always fun to see cats with a central role in the books I read, and it’s one of the main reasons I picked up this book in the first place.

3. Bigwig (Watership Down)

I actually read Watership Down not that long ago, and for a book club, and aside from the fact that nearly all the rabbits are super cool, Bigwig is definitely the coolest. He’s brave, he grows tremendously over the course of the book, and he brings a little humor to the story as well. This book is only told from rabbit perspective, so you get very attached to all the rabbits. I never thought I’d say that one of my favorite animal characters is a rabbit, but then Bigwig came along!

4. Brightbill/Animals of the Island (The Wild Robot)

Cover of "The Wild Robot" by Peter Brown

I love the Wild Robot series, and one of the best things about it, aside from Roz the robot, is the amount of animals you get to hear from. The whole book is focused on animals and Brightbill is Roz’s child, a goose she comes to mother after discovering his abandoned egg. Brightbill is so sweet and I love the tender mother/son love that this book portrays.

5. Henwen (The Chronicles of Prydain)

This is a silly one, but who doesn’t love a prophesizing pig? Henwen is not a major character in the Chronicles of Prydain, but he plays a very important roll, and I just love that about this book series. I love that a seemingly ordinary pig becomes so important to the story, simply because he also happens to see visions of the future! I need a prophesizing pig!

6. Mogget (Sabriel)

Cover of "Sabriel" by Garth Nix

I’ve talked about Mogget before on this blog, but he’s one of my favorite “evil” characters who end up being helpful/an aide to the good guys. Mogget is a demon who is trapped in the form of a cat. He has his own agenda, but while he’s in cat form, his evilness is contained, so to speak, and, really, he just makes for a really dynamic character!

7. Iorek Byrnison (His Dark Materials series)

Armored polar bear. Need I say more? Iorek is just so cool! I love his gruffness, which hides a tenderness for Lyra. He’s a no-nonsense, attack things head-on kind of character, but he’s also incredibly smart. There’s a reason he’s the king of the bear! This whole series is full of really cool animal characters, but I think Iorek will always be my favorite.

8. Morwen’s Cats (The Enchanted Forest Chronicles)

Cover of "Dealing with Dragons" by Patricia C. Wrede

If you’ve read the Enchanted Forest Chronicles, you know that Morwen is a witch and she has a TON of cats. They’re her familiars and they all have their own personalities and merits. I didn’t want to pick just one, since they all play various roles throughout the series. I just love that Morwen has so many cats and that they all will do things for her. I kind of want to be Morwen and have my own clowder of cats! She can speak to them and understand them, too! Bonus.

9. The Stark Direwolves (A Song of Ice and Fire series)

Honestly, Ghost is super cool, but I couldn’t decide which direwolf I’d pick to be my favorite. They all are interesting and awesome in their own ways. I wish the show had done them better justice, especially Nymeria, but I still can think of their book counterparts fondly. If I lived in Westeros, I’d want a direwolf for sure.

10. Garth (Time Cat)

Cover of "Time Cat" by Lloyd Alexander

I read Time Cat when I was in grade school, but I always remember it fondly because of Garth. I obviously love cats, and this book was one of my favorites growing up because it features a time-traveling cat! Garth takes his “owner” Jason on a wild adventure through time and I think that is so freaking cool! Forget Magic Treehouse, I want a time-travelling cat!
