Girls Burn Brighter | Hot Take Review

Just to be clear, my rating is due to my enjoyment of the book, not necessarily it’s literary merit. It’s well written and the story is good, but.

Hot Take On:

Here’s the thing: I don’t enjoy reading books that are massively sad. The two main characters in this book suffer such hardships, one significantly more than the other, and after each new horror, I just get more and more depressed about the whole thing. It’s just not fun to read a book that contains, among other things, rape (numerous occasions), abuse, fetishized amputated limbs (characters in the book fetishize, not the author), and sex-trafficking/ kidnapping and enforced servitude.

These are some of the many experiences you get to read about, in great detail. And the ending just…it’s abrupt and there is no payoff. I was really hoping for some hopeful connection at the end, but no. The reader gets nothing. Just like the women in this book. I feel really broken about the world and the state of humanity. I’m sad now, and it’s going to be a while before I recover from reading this book.

Rating: Not my cup of tea.

My GIF Reaction:

Chrissy Teigen making an uncomfortable face.
Me, during this whole book. Source.

    1. I agree. Most of the time, I want to read what makes me happy, but one of the reasons I do reading challenges is because it forces me to read books that I might not have picked or enjoy, but their message is important. This book had a lot of important things to say, and though I feel it was a little gratuitous with the violence, I do not regret reading it.
