Down the TBR Hole #47

Down The TBR Hole is a meme created by lost in a story that revolves around cleansing your TBR of all those books you’re never going to read and sort through it all to know what’s actually on there.

The rules:

  • Go to your Goodreads to-read shelf.
  • Order on ascending date added.
  • Take the first 5 (or 10 (or even more!) if you’re feeling adventurous) books. Of course, if you do this weekly, you start where you left off the last time.
  • Read the synopses of the books
  • Decide: keep it or should it go?

Now for the list:

Picking up from where I left off:

Witches: The Absolutely True Tale of Disaster in Salem – Rosalyn Schanzer

This is a middlegrade nonfiction that we have at my work. Like many, I have an interest in the Salem Witch Trials. It’s such an odd moment in US history and there is so much that is inaccurately presented about it. I am curious to see what this book has to say on the subject, since I don’t really know much outside of what most do. This book is fairly short, so I’m sure I could read it quite quickly. Perhaps another book to add to my (growing) list of books to read this October…

Verdict: KEEP

Space Opera – Catherynne M. Valente

I do love books set in space…and this book sounds so wild! Basically, it sounds like a future in which there is something like Eurovison in space…as a form of bringing civilizations together in one epic contest that is part gladiatorial, part beauty pageant, part concert, part continuation of the wars of the past…Sounds like a good time, right!? I know a coworker of mine read it and liked it, and I feel like our tastes are fairly similar, so I feel confident I’ll like this one, too!

Verdict: KEEP

The Language of Spells – Garret Freymann-Weyr

This is a middlegrade fantasy about a dragon named Grisha. In this world, no one can see him, until he comes across a young girl named Maggie. There’s a bit of a mystery, adventure, and magic! It sounds like a really sweet story of friendship, and I love friendships between people and fantasy creatures! Plus, check out this awesome cover! I definitely will be checking this book out!

Verdict: KEEP

The Girl with No Hands and Other Tales – Angela Slatter

This is a collection of classic fairytales and stories retold by Slatter. There isn’t much to go on by the description on Goodreads, but it looks like something I might enjoy reading. I like fairytales and the title really grabbed me. It’s interesting, because the book doesn’t have very many reviews and it looks mixed. But, I’m willing to give this book a look, still, and hopefully enjoy these tales retold.

Verdict: KEEP

Daughter of the Blood – Anne Bishop

This book seems to be a high-fantasy story of magic and a prophecy coming to pass. It seems to be a story of political intrigue and witches and I’m pretty down for that! A friend of mine who read it has said in her review that, while she enjoyed the book, it’s very violent, so I’m not too excited about that, but I’m still willing to give it a try.

Verdict: KEEP

Results:

Kept: 5

Discarded: 0

Thoughts?

So, what do you think? Any books I cut that you wouldn’t? Any books that I’m keeping that aren’t worth my time? Let me know! I’d love to hear from you. See you next week for another meme post.
