Down the TBR Hole #45

Down The TBR Hole is a meme created by lost in a story that revolves around cleansing your TBR of all those books you’re never going to read and sort through it all to know what’s actually on there.

The rules:

  • Go to your Goodreads to-read shelf.
  • Order on ascending date added.
  • Take the first 5 (or 10 (or even more!) if you’re feeling adventurous) books. Of course, if you do this weekly, you start where you left off the last time.
  • Read the synopses of the books
  • Decide: keep it or should it go?

Now, for the list!

Picking up from where I left off:

Blackhearts – Nicole Castroman

Who doesn’t want to read a book with pirates in it?! Ever since I saw Pirates of the Caribbean, I’ve kind of had a thing for them. This book is imagines the origin story of Blackbeard, one of the most infamous pirates of all time. I like the sound of that! It’s probably why I put it on my TBR. Buuuut…it doesn’t have very good reviews. Plus, many have commented about the MC’s pretty terrible alpha-male-toxic-masculinity thing and even my love of pirates probably isn’t enough to make me want to overlook something like that just for the sake of enjoying a story, so…

Verdict: GO

Us Against You – Fredrik Backman

Many of you who have read my blog know how much I love “Beartown.” Well, Backman did it. He wrote a sequel. I am on the fence, because on the one hand, the story felt finished and complete. But on the other, I kind of am curious to see the fall out after the ending of the first book. So that in itself has made me curious enough to want to read this one. And the fact that I really want to return to this world and these characters. I think I’ll listen to the audio for this, like I did with the first, since it was so good. Here’s hoping I enjoy this one just as much!

Verdict: KEEP

The Word is Murder – Anthony Horowitz

This book just sounds so off the wall that I have to read it! A woman plans her own funeral then is strangled six hours later! Plus the author gets involved! That’s some 4th-wall breaking shenanigans that I want to be a part of! I haven’t read anything by Horowitz before, but I’m read to give him a try with this one. It’s a murder-mystery and I do love those. It also sounds like it could be humerous, so I’m kind of interested to see how that plays out!

Verdict: KEEP

West – Edith Pattou

I read East, by Pattou and LOVED it. I still do. It’s one of those books that I re-read every once in a while because I enjoyed it so much the first time. It’s a re-telling of the fable “East of the Sun, West of the Moon,” and it’s fantastic! When I saw this book, it’s sequel, was coming out, I immediately put it on my TBR. I actually snagged an ARC, but I didn’t end up having enough time to read it, but I still very much want to. I’m really looking forward to returning to this world and seeing these amazing characters again.

Verdict: KEEP

Any Man – Amber Tamblyn

I put this book on my TBR because I like Amber Tamblyn as an actress and I was hearing a lot of buzz about this book. It focuses on a female serial rapist. Like, wow! I don’t really know any other books that approach things from that angle. I’m curious about this take and also on how Tamblyn’s writing is. I’m also curious to see how I feel about there being a female serial rapist. I know that women are capable of sexual harassment, just as men are, it’s just way less common. I will see how I feel after reading this book to see how she handles it.

Verdict: KEEP

Results:

Kept: 4

Discarded: 1

Thoughts?

So, what do you think? Any books I cut that you wouldn’t? Any books that I’m keeping that aren’t worth my time? Let me know! I’d love to hear from you. See you next week for another meme post.
