Hello again! It’s Tuesday, and of course that means it’s time for a Top 5 post. Top 5 Tuesdays and their topics are brought to you by Shanah @ the Bionic Bookworm. Check out her blog, she’s awesome, and this page for the list of topics for January!
Today’s topic is an interesting one, since I’m not listing specific books, but reasons for rating a book. Still, it’s important, I think to let people know why I give a top rating because we’re all different! My reasons might be totally different from some of you or other bloggers. I’m excited to share my reasons, because I honestly don’t give out 5-star ratings very often. I wouldn’t say it’s because I’m not easily impressed, but more to the idea that a book that wows me that much has to be something really special, something I would want to read again and again, something that I would recommend to literally everyone no matter their reading tastes.
So, here are my top 5 reasons for rating a book 5 stars:
1. I Can’t Put it Down
One of the main reasons I might rate a book 5 stars has to be about its readability. For me, it’s rare that a book so captures my attention that I don’t want to put it down. I have a pretty short attention-span and reading is no exception. It’s often the reason why I’m reading 5 or so books at a time, so I can read little bits out of each one – when I get bored, I move on to the next book, and so on until they’re all finished.
But if a book is so good that I don’t want to move on, that I keep reading chapter after chapter, page after page…that book has got to be something special to me, and that’s why I would consider giving it 5 stars. Now, not all page-turners, for me, are 5 stars, but that has to do with some of the other reasons, which I’ll be naming below.
2. I Can’t Stop Thinking About It
Have you ever read a book and it stays with you, even when you’re not currently reading it? Do you think about it when you’re just doing random things or out living your life? For me, if a book is so good that my mind keeps wandering back to it, even when I’m not reading it right then, that means it’s really memorable and has deeply effected me.
There are just some books that my brain won’t let go of, that I think about even after I’ve finished the book. I tend to rate this kind of book high, because it’s basically seeped into my consciousness and has really stuck with me.
3. I Like All the Characters
This one is kind of a biggie. It’s like how I am with music. If I like nearly every song an artist/group has made, then they’re probably in my top list of favorites. Same with books. A good book, to me, is built on good characters. Some books have one or two characters that really love, but the rest of the cast I can take or leave, like the main character is awesome, but all the side-characters are flat or boring. It’s times like these that I feel like the author didn’t care enough to round them out and give them more attention – so why should I?
Books that are in the top for me have a whole cast of characters that I really, really like, no matter if they’re the main character or not. Every character is good, none of them annoy me or are unremarkable. A good book has good characters, even if they are just supporting ones.
4. It Inspires Me
I’ve always loved writing and one of my big dreams is writing my own book. One of the best ways to improve your writing is to read. Not a hardship for me! So when I come across a book that really inspires me, I’m much more likely to rate it high.
Books that evoke our emotions, that paint powerful pictures in our minds, books that speak to us are more likely to leave lasting impressions and to excite our own creative sides. When a book does this for me, I know that it’s special and that I will return to it again and again for further guidance, for inspiration.
5. The Writing Impresses Me
There are many, many books that I love, but that aren’t necessarily written well. It might be just an easy escape book, or the story/plot is so good, or it’s just plain old fun, but the writing is…well…nothing to write home about. But then there are books that are just so well written that you can’t help but notice! When I’m enjoying a good book and the writing is one of the things that I can pinpoint as a reason for my enjoyment, I’m much more likely to rate that book high.
I don’t necessarily mean that the book is overflowing with flowery language or that there are lots of impressive words or that it’s highbrow. What I mean is, the language of the text just speaks to me, gives me the shivers, or there are passages that, in the moment, I recognize as really beautiful passages that I want to highlight or remember. Books with this kind of writing definitely deserve high praise, because they’re not common. They shine like diamonds and I have to give them their due.
Honorable Mention: When I Have Nothing Bad To Say About It
I have to add here that there are many books that I’ve rated 5 star because I have nothing bad to say about them. It’s a pretty telling piece of evidence when a book has nothing bad about it. That book is something special and it should definitely rate high for me. I didn’t include this one in my top 5 because it’s not a prerequisite for me rating a book 5 stars, but it certainly doesn’t hurt!
Thoughts & Thanks!
