When I received an ARC of Pumpkinheads, Rainbow Rowell’s new book (& graphic novel!), I was super excited. She’s one of my favorite YA authors and I counted myself suuuper lucky. But then I realized that it was just a teaser ARC, one chapter. I was stunned. I didn’t even know this was a thing in the ARC world (call me knew to it!) and I was supremely bummed.
I mean, how am I supposed to give a full review of only a chapter of a book? They want me to review this book with barely anything to go on! I don’t don that sort of thing!
But, I decided that I needed to at least say something, since I chose this book as my ARC of the month, so you’re getting a mini-review of the FIRST CHAPTER of Pumpkinheads. Keep that in mind.
Deja and Josiah are seasonal best friends.
Every autumn, all through high school, they’ve worked together at the best pumpkin patch in the whole wide world. (Not many people know that the best pumpkin patch in the whole wide world is in Omaha, Nebraska, but it definitely is.) They say good-bye every Halloween, and they’re reunited every September 1.
But this Halloween is different—Josiah and Deja are finally seniors, and this is their last season at the pumpkin patch. Their last shift together. Their last good-bye.
Josiah’s ready to spend the whole night feeling melancholy about it. Deja isn’t ready to let him. She’s got a plan: What if—instead of moping and the usual slinging lima beans down at the Succotash Hut—they went out with a bang? They could see all the sights! Taste all the snacks! And Josiah could finally talk to that cute girl he’s been mooning over for three years . . .
This story looks suuuuper cute. I mean really cute. I really like this first glimpse of the two main characters, Deja and Josiah. I think both characters, despite me only being able to hang with them for 18 pages, seem like really cool, unique characters. I also really love the dialogue between them. You can tell that they’re really good friends.
I’m also a big fan of the illustrations. I have not read anything illustrated by Hicks before, but I absolutely love her style. I think the colors are really bright, the lines are really clean, and the overall look is really cute.
I think the premise for this story sounds really interesting. I’m looking forward to see what hijinks/embarrassing situations Josiah and Deja get into. Needless to say, I’m very excited about this novel and I cannot wait to get my hands on it!
4/5 Pumpkins…for the 1st Chapter! 🎃🎃🎃🎃
